CHICAGO – Saint Xavier University senior kicker/punter Spencer Nolen (Columbia, Tenn./Nevada/UT-Chattanooga/Columbia Central) was named the NAIA Football National Special Teams Player of the Week Monday afternoon for his performance in Saturday's 37-25 road victory over University of St. Francis (Ill.) in Joliet, Ill. Nolen was also named the MSFA Midwest League Special Teams Player of the Week and the Beyond Sports Network (BSN) NAIA National Placekicker of the Week earlier Monday.
Nolen tied a Saint Xavier record with five field goals in SXU's big road crossover win over University St. Francis (Ill.). He hit from distances of 46, 43, 39, 32 and 30 yards and also converted on two of his three extra-point attempts accounting for 17 of the team's 37 points. Nolen was a two-time MSFA Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week honoree last year, but this is the first time in his career he has earned the national distinction. He becomes the second SXU football player to earn the NAIA's national weekly award this season after senior linebacker Zach Dolph (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) claimed the NAIA Defensive Player of the Week award back on September 9.
Saint Xavier (3-1 overall) prepares for its annual "Homecoming" game set for Saturday, October 5. The Cougars have a tough test with No. 4 ranked Grand View University (Iowa) coming to Chicago. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
