Notre Dame, Ind. - A first-half goal by senior defender Niko Jelicic in the 40th minute of play proved to be the decisive score in a 1-0 victory for Holy Cross College (Ind.) over Saint Xavier University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men's soccer action Sunday at Ganger Field in Notre Dame, Ind. The goal was set up on a corner kick by senior midfielder Garbhan Grant. SXU senior keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) got his second start of the season in goal Sunday and finished with six saves on the day. The loss drops the Cougars to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Saints move to 6-2-0 on the season and 2-0 in CCAC play.
SXU finished the game with 13 total shots, including nine on goal. Senior defender Dale Judickas (Hickory Hills, Ill./South Suburban CC/Stagg), junior midfielder Tom Lojek (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and junior forward Lorenzo Savino (Palatine, Ill./Harper JC/Fremd) each finished with two shots on goal Sunday. The Saints recorded 14 total shots in the game with seven on goal.
Saint Xavier (1-6 overall/1-1 CCAC) hosts CCAC foe Judson University (Ill.) on Wednesday, October 2, at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
