Bourbonnais, Ill. - Senior Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) led the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team with a ninth-place individual finish among the 189 runners taking part in the first ever running of the Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships (non-NCAA Division I) over the weekend at the Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Ill. As a team, the Cougars finished in sixth place among the 18 complete teams in attendance. Corcoran raced through the 8K course (8,000 meters) in a time of 25:22.
Corcoran was closely followed by a threesome of senior runners as Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), Brian Meyer (Bloomington, Ill./Ashford University/Bloomington) and Chris Sarna (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) took 29th place, 38th and 41st respectively with solid times of 26:01, 26:13 and 26:17. Sophomore Eric Hancock (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) rounded out the top five for the Cougars, finishing 47th overall in 26:36. Junior Kyle Counter (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) followed through as the sixth SXU runner in 26:42 for 51st place. The final two Cougar runners were freshman Abel Hernandez (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) in 56th place with 27:07 and senior Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in 58th with a time of 27:10.
"I am quite satisfied with the overall performance," said Saint Xavier University men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "We improved considerably (69 seconds per man) over the previous week's race on the same course. I see this team moving forward on a weekly basis. Corcoran ran his usual solid race, and Shellenberger, Meyer and Sarna created a solid pack that should lead this team over the next few weeks. We have a week off and should use it well to prepare for the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational at Augustana College. I expect season-best times there."
SXU takes a week off to prepare for the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. The meet takes place on Friday, September 27, at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island.
