Adrian, Mich. – Sophomore forward Lexi Cozzi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) provided the offense for Saint Xavier University, but three Siena Heights goals over a five-minute span in the second half spelled doom in a 4-2 loss in NAIA women's soccer action Saturday in Adrian, Mich. The game was tied, 1-1, at the half, but the host Saints broke the game open starting in the 63rd minute with three unanswered scores over the next five minutes of play. With the loss, SXU falls to 2-3-1 on the season.
The Cougars struck first when Cozzi took a pass from freshman forward Mariana Hoerr (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) and found the back of the net on her ensuing shot in the 22nd minute. Junior forward Alexis Donnelly tied the game in the 37th minute off an assist by sophomore forward Mikayla Ferer. After the game went to halftime still tied 1-1, the Donnelly-Ferer connection struck again this time in the 63rd minute to give Siena Heights the 2-1 edge. The goal provided the Saints some extra momentum as Ferer scored a goal less than four minutes later set up by a Donnelly assist. Less than a minute later, junior midfielder Paige Frey converted on a penalty kick try to give SHU a 4-1 lead. Cozzi responded with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute, but that completed the scoring for the game. Freshman Alex Perry (St. Louis, Mo./Perry) finished with 10 saves as the starting keeper for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (2-3-1 overall) gets its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate underway on Wednesday, September 25, with a home game against rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
