CHICAGO – Juniors Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) and Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) had solid nights on the court, but the Saint Xavier University volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) Friday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars lost the match in four sets (19-25, 18-25, 25-22 and 14-25). Hackert, a middle hitter, led SXU with 12 kills, while Shaffer, the team's setter, posted 32 assists, five kills and 13 digs. With the loss, Saint Xavier falls to 3-5 overall this season, while the Queen Bees improve to 7-3.
Junior libero Dominique Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./UIC/Mother McAuley) led the Cougars with 18 digs, while freshman defensive specialist Erica Harris (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) was right behind her with 17 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Heidi Gregerson (Park Ridge, Ill./UW-Parkside/Maine South) was tough at the net with eight kills and three total blocks (one solo) for SXU. Saint Ambrose was led offensively by junior outside hitter Hannah Turner, who finished with a match-best 17 kills on the night. The Queens Bees had a team attack percentage of .243 (57 kills, 15 errors) compared to just a .128 attack percentage (41 kills, 21 errors) for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (3-5 overall) kicks off its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, September 17, with a home match against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Chicago.
