Winona Lake, Ind. – Sophomore forward Lexi Cozzi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) had a goal in the 59th minute of play to tie the game, 1-1, but a second goal by Grace College (Ind.) three minutes later gave the hosts a 2-1 lead for good over the visiting Saint Xavier University women's soccer team Saturday afternoon in Winona Lake, Ind. SXU freshman keeper Alex Perry (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) had a solid start in goal for the Cougars logging 16 saves on the day. The SXU defense had its hands full with the Lady Lancers, who posted 34 total shots including 18 on goal. The Cougars finished the game with eight shots with four on goal.
All three goals came in the second half after neither team found the back of the net in the opening frame. Senior forward Emily Hickerson set up the game's first goal when she found freshman forward Meredith Hollar for the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute of play. Cozzi tied things up when she intercepted a Grace College pass and took it in on a breakaway for the score. Unfortunately for SXU, the Lancers were not done as sophomore forward Mallory Rondeau put her team up for good with an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute of action. Perry and the defense played tough the rest of the way keeping Grace from adding to its lead, but the Cougar offense could not deliver the equalizing goal in the final 27 minutes.
Saint Xavier (1-2-1 overall) heads to Fort Wayne, Ind., on Monday, September 9, with a match-up with University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. (eastern) start.
