Grand Rapids, Mich. – Giving up three goals in the first 25 minutes of play, the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team got off to a rocky start and eventually fell 4-0 to Aquinas College (Mich.) Wednesday afternoon at the AQ Athletic Field in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Cougars actually finished with one more shot (14) than the Saints (13), but the hosts did hold the advantage in shots on goal (9) over SXU (6). Junior forward Lorenzo Savino (Palatine, Ill./Harper JC/Fremd) finished the game with five shots for Saint Xavier, including two on goal.
Junior keeper AJ Pfatschbacher (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) recorded three saves as the starter in goal for the Cougars. Senior midfielder Jonathan Spencer scored half of the goals for Aquinas finding the back of the net in the 10th minute as well as the 25th minute of play. Fellow senior midfielder Mitch Torres recorded two assists and scored the game's final goal in the 89th minute. Sophomore forward Aldony Mendez completed the scoring for the Saints notching the game's second goal in the 21st minute.
Saint Xavier (0-4 overall) kicks off a three-game home stretch on Tuesday, September 10, hosting Goshen College (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
