CHICAGO – Junior defensive specialist Dominique Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./UIC/Mother McAuley) had a solid all-around performance Saturday in helping the Saint Xavier University volleyball team add two more victories to its season total in the final day of the SXU/Trinity Christian Crossover Classic at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Aramburu tallied 32 total digs and six service aces over both of SXU's matches on the day. The Cougars took down Spring Arbor University (Mich.) in the morning match in three sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-19) and then defeated Judson University (Ill.) in four sets (22-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-13) in the afternoon match-up. With the two victories, Saint Xavier improves to 3-4 overall this season.
Junior middle hitter Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) finished with nine kills in Saturday's morning match with Spring Arbor, while sophomore middle blocker Heidi Gregerson (Park Ridge, Ill./UW-Parkside/Maine South) posted six kills and three total blocks (two solos). Aramburu and sophomore libero Lauren Young (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) were impressive with their serves recording five aces apiece (both career highs) in the match. Aramburu also posted a team-best 12 digs. Junior setter Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) led the Cougars with 20 assists.
Three Saint Xavier players finished with double-digit kill totals in the late match led by Hackert's 13. Gregerson recorded 12 kills, while sophomore right side Meghan Falsey (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) had 11. Gregerson and Hackert were also tough defensively at the net combining for 12 total blocks (six solos) against the Eagles. Aramburu led SXU with 20 digs, while Young was also solid with 19 digs and team-high three aces. Shaffer made her presence felt in the afternoon match as well with 38 assists (career-high), eight kills and 14 digs.
Saint Xavier (3-4 overall) has an extended break not returning to action until Tuesday, September 10, with a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) road match against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Chicago.
