CHICAGO – In her first appearance in a Cougar uniform, sophomore middle blocker Heidi Gregerson (Park Ridge, Ill./UW-Parkside/Maine South) had a nice debut racking up 20 combined kills and five total blocks (one solo) over two matches for the Saint Xavier University volleyball team as part of the two-day SXU/Trinity Christian Crossover Classic Friday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago.  SXU lost its opening match of the tournament to University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20.  However, the Cougars picked up their first victory of the season in the late match taking down Huntington University (Ind.) in four sets 25-15, 25-27, 25-21 and 25-19.

Gregerson led the way in SXU's opening match against University of Saint Francis (Ind.) totaling a match-best 12 kills.  Junior middle hitter Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) posted eight kills and a solo block, while junior setter Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) led the way with 27 assists.  Junior defensive specialist Dominique Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./UIC/Mother McAuley) was solid defensively with a match-high nine digs.

Hackert had the hot hand for the Cougars in the match against Huntington posting 14 kills and a pair of solo blocks.  Sophomore right side Meghan Falsey (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and Gregerson each tallied eight kills toward the winning effort, while Shaffer was impressive serving the ball with six aces to go along with her 29 assists, 15 digs and seven kills in the match.  Sophomore libero Lauren Young (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) also finished the late match with 15 digs for SXU.

Saint Xavier (1-4 overall) wraps up tournament play on Saturday, August 31, with two more matches.  The first one has SXU going up against Spring Arbor University (Mich.) at 10 a.m.  The late match starts at 2 p.m. and has the Cougars taking on Judson University (Ill.).
