CHICAGO – A goal by sophomore forward Lexi Cozzi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) in the 87th minute of regulation forced extra periods as the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team tied Bethel College (Ind.), 1-1, in its season opener Wednesday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. In her collegiate debut, freshman keeper Alex Perry (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) had a solid outing finishing the night with six saves. The Cougars tallied 16 total shots in the game with junior midfielder Cassie Pullia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) leading the attack with three, including two on goal.
The game was a defensive battle in the early goings with neither team able to find the back of the net in the opening half. In the 70th minute of play, freshman forward Lauren Kindinger put the Pilots ahead, 1-0, when she took a pass from junior midfielder Meagen McPherson in front of the goal and punched it through for the go-ahead score. With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Cozzi broke free for the game-tying goal after a nice feed from junior midfielder Danielle Inzinga (Orland Park, Ill./Marist). SXU had its chances to win the game with a pair of shots on goal in the first overtime period, but Bethel sophomore keeper Mallory Conrad stopped them both. The two scoring chances for the Cougars in the extra period came off the foot of Inzinga.
Saint Xavier (0-0-1 overall) continues its home stand with a game against Westminster College (Utah) on Saturday, August 31. The game is slated for an 11:30 a.m. start at Deaton Field.
