Crown Point, Ind. – Led by the consistent play of seniors Kirby Brown (West Des Moines, Iowa/Kirkwood CC/Valley) and Brendan Ryan (Alsip, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Shepard), the Saint Xavier University men's golf team opened its 2013-14 season with a second-place finish in the two-day, seven-team Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Fall Preview Tuesday at White Hawk Country Club in Crown Point, Ind. Brown completed the tournament with a combined score of 152 shooting a 77 in his first round Monday and following that up with a round of 75 Tuesday to finish in a tie for second individually among the 43 competitors. Ryan shot a 78 in each of the rounds for a total score of 156, which placed him eighth overall in the field.
SXU had a combined team score of 635 finishing behind only AIB College of Business (610) and ahead of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rivals University of St. Francis (640), Calumet College of St. Joseph (652), Trinity Christian College (664) and Purdue University-North Central (728). Junior Kyle Bahnick (Inverness, Ill./Carthage College/Palatine-Fremd) turned in a combined score of 160 (76, 84) for the Cougars to finish at No. 12 individually. Sophomore Zack Trent (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) was also solid for SXU with a two-day total of 167 (85, 82).
Saint Xavier continues its fall season at the Cropper Golf Classic hosted by Mount Mercy University at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion, Iowa. The two-day tournament kicks off at noon on Saturday, September 7.
