Dearborn, Mich. – Junior middle hitter Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) and sophomore right side Meghan Falsey (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) both turned in solid efforts, but the Saint Xavier University volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the 2013 season Saturday morning at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Tournament in Dearborn, Mich. The Cougars (0-2 overall) fell to a pair of nationally ranked foes in No. 11 Madonna University (Mich.) and No. 22 Point Park University (Pa.). Hackert recorded a combined 13 kills and eight total blocks (two solos, six assists) on the day, while Falsey led the SXU offensive charge with 16 kills to go along with four total blocks (three solos, one assist).
In the opening match against Madonna, the Cougars had difficulty finding consistent offense and fell in three straight sets by scores of 18-25, 12-25 and 12-25. Saint Xavier posted 19 team kills in the match, but also finished with 19 attack errors (.000 attack percentage). Falsey had eight kills and a solo block, while sophomore libero Lauren Young (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) was solid defensively with a match-best 13 digs. Junior setter Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) finished the season opener with 14 assists and four kills.
In the day's second match, SXU improved on the offensive end, but lost the hard-fought match to Point Park in four sets, 15-25, 25-23, 20-25 and 19-25. Junior Dominique Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./UIC/Mother McAuley) was impressive on both offense and defense for the Cougars with a team-high 10 kills and 14 digs. Young led the team in digs with 19, while Hackert finished with nine kills and four block assists. Falsey recorded eight kills and two solo blocks in the late match.
Saint Xavier (0-2 overall) heads to Clinton, Iowa, on Tuesday, August 27, for a road match against Ashford University (Iowa). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
