Columbus, Ga. – A three-run second inning was the difference in the game between No. 9 Saint Xavier University and No. 8 Reinhardt University (Ga.) as the Cougars lost, 3-0, in the opening round of the 2013 NAIA Softball National Championship final site at the South Commons Softball Complex on Friday. SXU had its chances to score leaving nine runners on base. Freshman right fielder/pitcher Nicole Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) led the offense going 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double.
Things looked promising early as Nicole Nonnemacher had a lead-off double in the bottom of the first, but would end up stranded at third. Reinhardt took advantage and scored three times in the top of the second, all coming with two outs. Junior pitcher Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) suffered the loss falling to 26-4 on the year. She lasted 4.1 innings giving up seven hits, three runs (three earned), walking one and striking out eight. Nicole Nonnemacher came in for relief and finished the game pitching 2.2 innings and giving up just one hit, while striking out two, walking one and allowing no runs. The Cougars loaded the bases in the sixth inning after a lead-off single by senior third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), but the Lady Eagles would get out of the jam by getting a force out.
Saint Xavier (49-8 overall/19-1 CCAC) will play No. 5 California State-San Marcos (Calif.) at 9 a.m. central on Saturday, May 25.
