CHICAGO – Saint Xavier University junior right-hander Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) took care of business on the mound and freshman second baseman Kasey Kanaga (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) did so at the plate to lead the Cougars to the 2013 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Softball Tournament Championship over the weekend and land the conference's weekly individual honors for themselves Tuesday. Nonnemacher won a pair of tourney games to claim CCAC Pitcher of the Week accolades, while Kanaga was "Miss Clutch" driving in game-winning runs twice en route to earning the league's Player of the Week award for the seven-day period ending May 5.
Playing in her first conference tournament, Kanaga collected two hits in each of SXU's four games and went 8-for-11 (.727) overall, while driving in the go-ahead runs in both victories over No. 15 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Kanaga opened the tournament with a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored in a 4-3 victory against Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Thursday. She then drove in two runs in Friday's 5-4 win against Olivet Nazarene before delivering again the next day with her game-winner in the second championship game, a 4-3 decision. In the two respective contests, the Cougars trailed 4-0 and 3-0.
Nonnemacher earned the pitching honor for the third time this season after going the distance in the 4-3 win over Robert Morris and the 4-3 title-game victory against Olivet Nazarene on Saturday. She struck out 11 batters in 15 2/3 innings covering three appearances. Nonnemacher improved to 24-2 on the season with the two tournament victories.
Saint Xavier takes a 46-6 overall record into the next round of the postseason, the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
