Bourbonnais, Ill. – Senior third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) scored the game-winning run from second base beating the tag at home plate off an RBI single to left field by junior designated hitter Ariel Hinton (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) to give the No. 11 ranked and No. 1 seeded Saint Xavier University softball team a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 5 seed Robert Morris University (Ill.) in the second round of the 2013 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Softball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field in Bourbonnais, Ill. With the victory, the Cougars (44-5 overall) advance to face No. 2 seed and tournament host Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Friday, May 3, for a marquee match-up scheduled for 2 p.m. The winner of Friday's 2 p.m. showdown advances to Saturday's championship with no losses in the double-elimination tournament.
Junior right-hander Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) picked up the win (23-2) on the mound for SXU throwing all seven frames and allowing eight hits, three runs (all earned) and a walk with five strikeouts. Mollohan, freshman right fielder Nicole Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) and freshman second baseman Kasey Kanaga (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) each finished with two hits to lead the Cougars offensively. Kanaga scored two of the team's four runs in the game. Robert Morris got on the scoreboard first when senior shortstop Andrea Falco hit a two-run single to left field in the top of the third inning. Saint Xavier answered in the bottom of the frame with a run after Kanaga hit a double down the right field line and later scored on a throwing error by the Eagles.
A solo shot to right field by RMU junior first baseman Madlyn Joyce made the score, 3-1, in the top of the sixth. The Cougars took advantage of another big error by the Eagles in the bottom half of the frame to plate another run and close to within one again, 3-2. With just three outs remaining, SXU responded in a big way opening the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles by Kanaga and Nicole Nonnemacher. After a double play on an infield liner, Mollohan stepped to the plate with the game-tying run on second base and two outs. A hard hit ball up the middle by Mollohan tied the game at 3-3 and she was able to advance to second base on the throw to home plate. After a walk by sophomore first baseman Amanda Hainlen (Bloomington, Ill./Heartland CC/Bloomington), Hinton came up and delivered a single to left field to bring home Mollohan and complete the rally.
