Crestwood, Ill. – Sophomore third baseman Bryan Villanova (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) went 3-for-6 with a run scored and three RBI in leading the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a doubleheader split with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Roosevelt University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Ill. The Cougars started the day with an 8-3 victory in game one, but a pair of Lakers' runs in the bottom of the eighth inning led to a 5-3 loss in the nightcap. Senior left-hander Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) earned the win on the mound in Saturday's opener improving to 2-0 on the year and allowing seven hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks with three strikeouts over the first 5.2 innings.

SXU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning following a RBI single by junior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet JC/St. Laurence). A RBI single to right field by freshman second baseman Brian McQuillan (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) in the top of the second expanded the lead to 2-0. A throwing error helped lead to a run for Roosevelt in the bottom of the third, but Saint Xavier answered right back with two runs in the top of the fourth scoring both off wild pitches. The Cougars put the game away in the fifth scoring four runs in the frame with the highlight, a two-run single to right field by Villanova. The Lakers got two more in the bottom of the sixth, but sophomore closer Dan Wetzel (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) came in and allowed just one hit and no runs over the four batters he faced to earn the save, his third of the season.

Senior right-hander Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) got the start for the Cougars in game two throwing 6.1 innings and giving up six hits, three runs (all earned) and four walks with a pair of strikeouts. Unfortunately for Saint Xavier, Roosevelt scored two runs off Wetzel in the eighth to claim the victory. Wetzel fell to 3-3 on the year with the loss. Freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) led the offensive charge racking up three hits (3-for-5) to go along with a run scored. Roosevelt went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first driving in a run on a fielder's choice, but SXU tied the game in the top of the third when Augle scored on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a RBI groundout by junior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel). The Lakers took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh scoring a pair off a RBI triple and a hit batter with the bases loaded. Villanova tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the eighth on a RBI single to left field, but a two-run double by RU in the bottom of the frame put the home team up for good. SXU managed just one hit, a single, in the top of the ninth.

Saint Xavier (19-15 overall/14-9 CCAC) returns to action on Monday, April 22, with a conference doubleheader against Robert Morris University (Ill.). The games will be played at Geils Field in Bensenville, Ill., with the first one starting at 5 p.m.
