CHICAGO – Junior right-hander Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) and freshman right-hander Nicole Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) added two more wins to their already impressive records in leading the No. 13 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team to another Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) sweep Saturday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars defeated Trinity Christian College (Ill.) taking the first game, 4-0, to move Megan's Nonnemacher's record to 18-1 this season and then earned a 4-1 victory in game two to put Nicole Nonnemacher at 17-2 on the year. The games were being played at Saint Xavier since TCC's field was deemed unplayable due to recent rain. Saturday's first game was picked up in the bottom of the fourth inning after the game was suspended Wednesday afternoon due to a thunderstorm. With the sweep, SXU improves to 35-3 overall and stays unblemished in conference play at 14-0.
The Cougars did all their offensive damage in Saturday's first game in the top of the second inning. Junior designated hitter Ariel Hinton (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) led off the frame with a towering homer to left field to score the game's first run. Nicole Nonnemacher added another run later in the inning with a RBI single through the right side. Sophomore catcher Megan James (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) completed the inning's scoring with a two-run triple to the gap in right-centerfield. Megan Nonnemacher allowed just five hits and no walks en route to her ninth shutout of the season. She also added eight strikeouts.
Senior third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led the way in game two going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Saint Xavier scored three runs in the top of the second behind a RBI single by Nicole Nonnemacher followed shortly by a two-run single to right field by Mollohan. The Cougars carried the 3-0 lead through the fourth inning before adding another run in the top of the fifth on a RBI double by Nicole Nonnemacher. The Trolls scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to complete the game's scoring. Nicole Nonnemacher threw all seven frames and gave up just three hits, one run (unearned) and three walks with 11 strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (35-3 overall/14-0 CCAC) continues Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Sunday, April 21, with a home doubleheader against Purdue University-North Central (Ind.). The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
