CHICAGO – Powered by a combined 22 hits on the day, including five doubles and a homer, the Saint Xavier University baseball team swept a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Tuesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.  The Cougars (18-14 overall/13-8 CCAC) got a huge sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Alika Andres (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kaloheo) in the bottom of the sixth inning that proved to be the game-winning RBI in a 4-3 victory in Tuesday's opener.  In the late game, SXU used six runs in the bottom of the third inning to spark a 12-2 win in seven innings.

Junior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) looked good on the mound throwing all seven frames in moving his record to 5-0 on the year with Tuesday's victory.  He allowed six hits, three runs (all earned) and a walk with five strikeouts.  The Cougars went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second after a throwing error scored freshman shortstop Alec Barnhart (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) from third base.  A RBI double by senior designated hitter Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) and another run off a fielder's choice plated two more runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 3-0.  However, the Scarlet Hawks tied the game in the top of the fifth taking advantage of a RBI single and an infield error to score three runs.  Fortunately for SXU, Andres was able to lay down the perfect bunt to bring home the go-ahead run from third base in the sixth and Vachon put IIT down in order with a strikeout and two groundouts in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

The Scarlet Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third of Tuesday's nightcap following an infield error.  Saint Xavier responded in a big way plating six runs in the bottom of the frame powered by a three-run double by junior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) and a two-run homer by junior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet Junior College/St. Laurence).  ITT added a RBI single in the top of the fourth to make the score, 6-2, but the Cougars got the run back in the bottom of the sixth off a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley).  The game ended early in the bottom of the seventh with SXU bringing home five more runs led by RBI hits from senior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel), Klett and Klein.  O'Shea led the offensive charge in the second game going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI.  Klein earned the victory (3-2) on the mound for the Cougars throwing all seven innings and giving up eight hits, two runs (both earned) and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (18-14 overall/13-8 CCAC) heads to Bensenville, Ill., on Wednesday, April 17, to take on Robert Morris University (Ill.) in a key conference doubleheader.  The first game of the pair is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Geils Field.
