Grand Rapids, Mich. – Managing a combined 12 total hits on the day, the Saint Xavier University baseball team struggled to get into a offensive rhythm and dropped a pair of non-conference games to Davenport University (Mich.) Sunday afternoon at the Farmers Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Cougars (16-14 overall) dropped the first seven-inning game by a score of 8-4 and then recorded only four hits in the second game en route to a 10-0 loss. Senior designated hitter Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North), senior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) and freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) were the only three SXU players to post multiple hits Sunday with each recording two on the day.

Davenport went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning of game one on a RBI single to right field. Saint Xavier tied things up in the top of the third on Augle's RBI single to the right side. A throwing error by SXU and a RBI single by the Panthers in the bottom of the frame gave the hosts a 3-1 lead. Davenport added three more runs in the fourth to push the advantage to 6-1. The Cougars got a run in the top of the fifth off a RBI single by junior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley). However, another RBI single and a run on a fielding error gave the Panthers two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score, 8-2. Klett and O'Shea each hit a RBI single in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to four runs, 8-4, but that was all the offense the Cougars could muster the rest of the way. Senior right-hander Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) suffered the loss (4-3) in game one Sunday throwing the first three frames and allowing five hits, three runs (all earned) and no walks with a strikeout. Klett was the only Saint Xavier player to get two hits in the late game going 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomore righty Terrance Southern (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) took the loss (0-1) on the mound for SXU throwing the first three innings and giving up four hits, six runs (four earned) and four walks with no strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (16-14 overall/11-8 CCAC) hosts a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) on Tuesday, April 16. The first game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
