CHICAGO – Led by three hits, including a three-run homer, by junior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel), the Saint Xavier University baseball team braved the wet and cold weather conditions and were rewarded with an 11-8 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over Holy Cross College (Ind.) Friday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The scheduled nine-inning game was called due to darkness in the bottom of the fifth, but counts as an official game since at least five innings were played. The Cougars improve to 15-11 overall with the victory and 10-7 in CCAC play, while the Saints fall to 16-22 on the year and 8-11 in the conference standings. Junior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) earned the win (3-2) throwing all five frames and allowing six hits, eight runs (six earned) and four walks with a pair of strikeouts.
Both teams took advantage of the wet field conditions in the first inning with each squad plating five runs in the frame. SXU recorded three errors in the top of the first to help Holy Cross take a 5-0 lead and then two wild pitches, four walks, a hit batsman and two hits in the bottom of the first gave the host Cougars five runs to tie things up. Freshman shortstop Alec Barnhart (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) hit an RBI double to left field in the first inning for SXU to highlight the frame. An RBI double by Myjak in the second inning gave Saint Xavier a 6-5 lead. However, the Saints answered with two runs in the top of the third off an RBI double and an infield groundout to go ahead, 7-6.
In the bottom of the third, the Cougars got a two-run double from freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) and later a three-run blast with two outs by Myjak over the wall in right-centerfield to plate five runs and make the score, 11-7. Klein put the Saints down in order in the top of the fourth, but the score remained unchanged after SXU managed just one hit in the bottom of the frame. Holy Cross got another run in the fifth off an RBI single, but with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the game was called by the umpires and ruled an official game due to darkness.
Saint Xavier (15-11 overall/10-7 CCAC) continues the conference series with the Saints on Saturday, April 13, with a doubleheader in South Bend, Ind. The first game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (eastern) start.
