Bensenville, Ill. – Junior right-hander Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) gave up just two hits and a walk over all five innings in a 10-0 victory for the No. 15 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Robert Morris University (Ill.) Tuesday afternoon at the Redmond Complex in Bensenville, Ill. The Cougars (21-3 overall/4-0 CCAC) scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to capture a thrilling 5-2 victory in the late game. With the sweep, SXU has now won 18 of its last 19 games and is off to one of its best starts in program history at 21-3 overall.
Nonnnemacher improved her season record to 11-1 with Tuesday's victory and also tallied five strikeouts en route to the win. The Cougars scored three runs in the top of the first inning taking advantage of two early fielding errors by the Eagles. Senior third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) highlighted a six-run frame for SXU in the top of the third with a two-run single. A RBI on a groundout by freshman second baseman Kasey Kanaga (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) in the fifth completed the game's scoring.
Freshman righty Nicole Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) picked up the game two victory (10-2) throwing all nine frames and giving up six hits, two runs (both earned) and three walks with 10 strikeouts. Robert Morris scored a run off a RBI single in the bottom of the first and then went ahead 2-0 in the fifth inning following a RBI triple. Two errors by the Eagles in the top of the sixth led to a pair of unearned runs for Saint Xavier and tied the game, 2-2, which forced extra innings after a scoreless seventh. A RBI single by sophomore first baseman Amanda Hainlen (Bloomington, Ill./Heartland CC/Bloomington) and a two-run single by senior shortstop Ashley Sullivan (Lemont, Ill./UW-Parkside/Lemont) gave SXU three runs in the top of the ninth. Mollohan and Nicole Nonnemacher each recorded three hits and a run scored in the late game.
Saint Xavier (21-3 overall/4-0 CCAC) heads to Deerfield, Ill., on Thursday, April 4, to play a conference doubleheader against Trinity International University (Ill.). The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
