CHICAGO – Behind a solid day at the plate by sophomore third baseman Bryan Villanova (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) and a nice effort on the mound for junior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), the Saint Xavier University baseball team took a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) game from Judson University, 6-3, Thursday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. Villanova went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Vachon improved to 3-0 on the year throwing the entire seven-inning affair and allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks with three strikeouts. With the victory, the Cougars (10-6 overall/5-2 CCAC) have won four straight games, all against CCAC competition. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Elgin, Ill., as a doubleheader, but was moved to SXU and changed to one game due to poor field conditions at Judson.

Junior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet Junior College/St. Laurence) helped get Saint Xavier on the scoreboard early when he brought home the game's first run on a walk with the bases loaded. Villanova put the Cougars up, 2-0, later in the frame recording an RBI on a groundout to second base. Freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) gave SXU a 3-0 cushion in the top of the second inning when he brought home another run on a groundout to the shortstop. A RBI double by the Eagles in the bottom of the third inning made the score, 3-1. Junior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) and Villanova spurred a three-run inning for the Cougars in the top of the fourth. Myjak had a RBI single to right field, while Villanova scored a pair of runs on a single up the middle. A pair of RBI singles by Judson in the bottom of the frame made it a three-run game, 6-3. Vachon kept the Judson bats in check the rest of the way allowing just two hits over the final three frames to earn the win. The Eagles committed five errors in the ballgame.

Saint Xavier (10-6 overall/5-2 CCAC) continues conference play on Friday, March 29, with a nine-inning game against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start at Tiger Field in Bourbonnais, Ill.
