Whiting, Ind. – Belting out 28 total hits and not allowing a single earned run on the day, the Saint Xavier University baseball team looked dominant in a pair of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victories over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Saturday afternoon at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind. The Cougars (9-6 overall/4-2 CCAC) won the first game by a score of 12-2 in seven innings and then won the second game, 9-2, in nine innings. With the doubleheader sweep Saturday, SXU takes all three games of the conference series after beating the Crimson Wave, 15-5, in seven innings in Friday's home opener at Ferrell Field in Chicago.
In Saturday's opener, senior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) and freshman centerfielder Jim Augle (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) each recorded three hits to lead Saint Xavier's offensive attack. O'Shea had a double, a run scored and three RBI in the first game, while Augle posted a double and three runs scored. Senior right-hander Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) was equally impressive on the mound earning his fourth win of the season (4-0) and going six innings allowing five hits, two runs (both unearned) and a walk with two strikeouts. After CCSJ scored a run in the bottom of the first following an early error, SXU responded with 10 runs over the next two innings to take control of the game for good.
Junior designated hitter and pitcher Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) had the huge game in the nightcap for the Cougars getting the win on the mound (2-0) as the starter and also turning in a 3-for 5 performance at the plate with a run scored and a RBI. Klein threw the first eight innings of game two and gave up just one hit and a walk with an impressive nine strikeouts. Junior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet Junior College/St. Laurence) had a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to highlight a five-run frame for the Cougars. Augle also finished the late game with three RBI, while freshman shortstop Alec Barnhart (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) joined Klein with a team-leading three hits. Junior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) had a solid outing in the second game as well going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI.
Saint Xavier (9-6 overall/4-2 CCAC) takes a short break from its conference schedule and will head to Evanston, Ill., on Tuesday, March 26, for a match-up with NCAA Division I Northwestern University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
