Phoenix, Ariz. – Behind three solid rounds by junior James Kerr (Solihull, England/Western Texas/Arch Bishop Ilsley), the Saint Xavier University men's golf team got its spring season underway last week in Arizona competing in two tournaments over SXU's "Spring Break" week. The Cougars finished seventh out of eight teams at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) Spring Invite at Antelope Hills North Golf Course in Prescott, Ariz., from March 10-12 and then won a three-team tourney with Arizona Christian University and Baldwin-Wallace College (Ohio) on March 14 at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix. Kerr shot two rounds of 75 for a combined score of 150 to lead the team at the ERAU Spring Invite and then scored a round of 74 to lead SXU to a team score of 306 in Thursday's tourney.
"Our team worked very hard during the offseason on strength & conditioning, mechanics, balance and flexibility to finally get an opportunity to get back on the golf course in Arizona last week," said first-year Saint Xavier University men's golf coach Mike Mandakas. "Going out to a region of the country where we knew other teams play year round, our guys stayed focused on working on their own games and played well through both tournaments."
Sophomore Kyle Bahnick (Inverness, England/Carthage College/Palatine-Fremd) also shot a combined 150 (75, 75) at the Spring Invite before scoring a 79 for eighth place individually at Moon Valley Country Club. Junior Brendan Ryan (Alsip, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Shepard) was solid as well shooting an 81 in SXU's first round of the Spring Invite, but bouncing back in a big way for a 73 in the second round (154 combined). Ryan scored a 76 for fourth place (tie) in Thursday's tourney. Other key contributors for the Cougars were junior Kirby Brown (West Des Moines, Iowa/Kirkwood CC/Valley) and freshman Zack Trent (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township). Trent shot a 158 (78, 77) at the ERAU Spring Invite and an 84 at the Moon Valley Country Club, while Brown scored a 158 (83, 75) at the Invite and finished sixth overall (77) in Thursday's tourney. SXU had a team score of 607 (309, 298) at the Spring Invite.
Saint Xavier continues its spring season on Wednesday, April 3, at the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers Spring Invite. The Invite takes place at Balmoral Golf Course in Crete, Ill.
