Marshall, Mo. – Junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) racked up 18 total kills and three service aces, but the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches to Missouri Valley College (Mo.) Saturday afternoon in Marshall, Mo. The Cougars (5-13 overall) dropped the first match in four sets 25-23, 13-25, 10-25 and 17-25 and then fell in the second match by scores of 21-25, 11-25, 25-21 and 23-25. Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) also had a solid performance for SXU in the two road matches combining for 34 assists, seven kills, four service aces, four total blocks (one solo) and 15 digs.
Other key performers for Saint Xavier over the weekend were freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South), junior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) and sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central). Kull posted 13 combined kills and five block assists, while O'Connell recorded nine total kills and four total blocks (one solo). Blackwood chipped in nine kills as well along with 12 combined digs and a pair of block assists.
Saint Xavier (5-15 overall/3-7 MAMVIC) hosts Warner University (Fla.) for a non-conference battle on Thursday, March 14. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
