CHICAGO – Junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the way with 26 combined kills as the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team rolled to a pair of victories this weekend at the Robert Morris University Tri-Match at Attack Athletics in Chicago. The Cougars (5-13 overall) took the first match against Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) rival and host Robert Morris in just three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-23. SXU then went toe-to-toe with No. 6 ranked Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) in non-conference action and came away with a five-set win 14-25, 25-20, 25-18, 21-25 and 15-13. The Cougars had their offense clicking over the two matches racking up 85 total kills to just 26 attacking errors. The victory was the third straight for SXU.
Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) was tough as well for Saint Xavier in Friday's Tri-Match posting 63 total assists, three service aces, five block assists and 12 digs. Freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) and junior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) were key to the offensive surge for the Cougars with 16 and 13 total kills, respectively. Kull also had 11 total blocks (two solos) over the two matches. Cousin's 18 kills in the victory over Cardinal Stritch tied his career-best single match total.
Saint Xavier (5-13 overall/3-7 MAMVIC) hosts NCAA Division III Carthage College (Wis.) on Tuesday, March 5, in a non-conference match-up. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
