CHICAGO – Junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team with 16 kills en route to a five-set victory (25-23, 23-25, 25-19, 25-27 and 15-7) over Johnson & Wales University (Colo.) in Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) crossover action Monday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) recorded a career-high 45 assists to go along with a pair of service aces, five digs and three total blocks (one solo) for the Cougars. SXU also got double-digit kills from junior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) with a career-high 15 and freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) with 14.
Sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was tough for the Cougars as well with nine kills and eight digs, while junior right side Jacob Siska (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) tied the program's record for aces in a match with six service aces on the night. Kull also tallied five aces and six total blocks (two solos) to go along with his 14 kills. The Wildcats were led offensively by junior right side Sean Martin with 25 kills.
Saint Xavier (3-13 overall/2-7 MAMVIC) heads downtown on Friday, March 1, to take part in the Robert Morris University Tri-Match. The Cougars take on host RMU at noon Friday in a conference match-up and then follow that with a non-conference match against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.).
