CHICAGO – Junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) tied his career high with 18 kills and a team-best eight digs, but it was not enough to lead the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team past Lourdes University (Ohio) in Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) East Division action Thursday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Lourdes took the first set, 25-16, but SXU bounced right back with a 25-21 win. However, the Gray Wolves got the momentum back taking the next two sets 25-19 and 25-18 to claim the match. The Cougars had problems with attacking and serving errors throughout the match racking up 32 errors on the attack and nine on serves.
Sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) also tallied double-digits in kills with 10 to go along with his six digs and two block assists. Freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) was tough defensively finishing the night with seven total blocks (one solo). Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) led SXU with 33 assists and also posted five block assists, while junior right side Jacob Siska (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) had seven digs and two service aces. Freshman setter Oliver Cizmazia paced Lourdes offensively with 14 kills in the match.
Saint Xavier (2-13 overall/2-7 MAMVIC) continues its home stretch with a non-conference match on Monday, February 25, against Johnson & Wales University (Fla.). The match is set for a 7 p.m. start.
