CHICAGO – Extending a pipeline that has produced some high level talent for the Saint Xavier University football program over the years, head coach Mike Feminis was thrilled with the recent signings of linebacker Tyler Sharp and defensive back Matt Johnson out of Rockford Boylan Catholic High School in Rockford, Ill. Sharp brings a 6-1, 200-pound frame and hails from Caledonia, Ill. Johnson is a Rockford native who comes in at 5-11 and 165 pounds. Both played for John Cacciatore as seniors at Rockford Boylan Catholic High School.
"Tyler and Matt come from one of the best high school football programs in the state and it's great to keep our pipeline going in the Rockford area," said Feminis. "Tyler has all the tools to be an outstanding linebacker for us. He runs well, plays physical and has really good instincts. Matt had an incredible senior season and we think he can play corner or free safety for us. He has excellent coverage skills and a knack for finding the ball. We expect both of these guys to have outstanding careers at SXU and both will likely contribute sooner than later."
Saint Xavier is coming off another amazing season finishing the 2012 campaign with an 11-2 overall record and making its fourth straight appearance in the semifinals of the NAIA Football Championship Series. The Cougars carried the NAIA's No. 1 ranking for the first five weeks of the 2012 season and later went on to defeat then No. 1 ranked Marian University (Ind.), 23-6, on November 1 in Chicago. SXU was ranked the No. 4 spot in the NAIA's final regular season top 25 poll.
