Davenport, Iowa – Behind team-highs of 11 kills and 13 digs by junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team went down to the wire with No. 5 ranked Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) Wednesday evening in Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) East Division action at Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport, Iowa. The match went all five sets with the Fighting Bees winning the first one, 25-14, and the Cougars bouncing back in the second for a 26-24 victory. SAU won the third set, 25-17, but SXU came right back to take the fourth, 29-27. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Saint Ambrose was able to pull away for the 15-8 win in the deciding fifth set.
Sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) also recorded double figures in kills with 10, while sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) tallied 39 assists and seven digs. Freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) also had a nice outing Wednesday finishing with five kills, three service aces and five block assists. The Fighting Bees had four players post 12 kills apiece. With the loss, SXU falls to 2-10 overall on the season and 2-6 in MAMVIC East Division play. Saint Ambrose improves to 11-3 on the year and sits at 7-1 in the conference standings.
Saint Xavier (2-10 overall/2-6 MAMVIC) heads up to Kenosha, Wis., on Saturday, February 16, for two matches at Carthage College (Wis.). The Cougars take on Carthage in the first match at 11 a.m. and then take on Lindenwood University (Mo.) in the late match at 1 p.m.
