CHICAGO – Junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) each posted double-digit kill totals, but it was not enough as the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team fell to Clarke University (Iowa) in three sets (19-25, 17-25, 23-25) in Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) East Division play Monday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Cousin led the Cougars with 13 kills, while Kull posted 12 kills and had a team-high attack percentage of .647. With the loss, SXU falls to 2-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play, while the Crusaders improve to 6-5 on the year and 4-1 in the MAMVIC.
Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) helped get the offense clicking Monday for the Cougars totaling a team-high 29 assists on the evening. Junior right side hitter Jacob Siska (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) was solid defensively leading the team with eight digs, while Kull led SXU in blocks with two total (one solo). Sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished with five kills and seven digs as well for the Cougars. Sophomore outside hitter Tyler Wills led the Clarke attack with 12 kills.
Saint Xavier (2-9 overall/2-5 MAMVIC) takes on No. 5 ranked Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) in MAMVIC East Division action on Wednesday, February 13. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Davenport, Iowa.
