Deerfield, Ill. – A lay-up by senior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) in the final seconds of regulation kept the No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team's win streak intact at 13 games in an 88-84 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) road victory over Trinity International University (Ill.) Saturday night at the Meyer Sports Complex in Deerfield, Ill. The Cougars (24-4 overall/20-2 CCAC) were led in scoring by junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) with 26 points in addition to his team-high 10 rebounds. Senior point guard Anthony Grant (Calumet City, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) also had a big night for SXU dropping 20 points on impressive 8-for-14 shooting from the floor.
Sophomore guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) was the third Cougar to score in double figures Saturday night chipping in 16 points toward the victory. Saint Xavier was extremely consistent offensively through the game hitting 51 percent of its shots in both halves and for the game (36-for-70). However, the Trojans were even hotter shooting at a 61 percent clip (34-for-56) for the contest. Fortunately for SXU, ball security proved to be TIU's downfall as the visitors tallied nine steals, which helped lead to 19 turnovers by the hosts.
The Cougars got off to a slow start trailing 10-0 in the game's first three minutes. However, a 14-4 run over the next four minutes of play quickly changed the momentum as Karp scored seven of SXU's 14 points during the surge. The game stayed close until the final two minutes of the frame when jumpers by Karp and Grant helped give Saint Xavier a seven-point lead, 48-41. A lay-up by the Trojans as time expired in the half made the score, 48-43, at the break. The Cougars pushed the lead into double digits in the opening minutes of the second half going ahead by as many as 16 points, 69-53, with 12 minutes to play in regulation. However, the Trojans did not go down without a fight and cut the deficit to two, 82-80, on a three-pointer with just under two minutes remaining. Trailing by two again, 86-84, and having possession with 18 seconds to play, TIU committed its costliest turnover of the night leading to Harvey's breakaway lay-up to secure the win.
Saint Xavier (24-4 overall/20-2 CCAC) hosts a conference match-up with Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) on Wednesday, February 13. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
