Palos Heights, Ill. – Key performances by junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) helped the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team split its two matches this weekend in Palos Heights, Ill. On Friday night, the Cougars dropped a tough match-up with Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) East Division foe Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) in three sets 26-24, 25-19, 25-22. SAU was ranked No. 5 in the latest NAIA Men's Volleyball National Top 10 Poll. SXU bounced back in a big way Saturday taking down Siena Heights University (Mich.) in four sets (18-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-20) for a MAMVIC East Division victory. Cousin and Kull each totaled 21 kills for the Cougars on the weekend.
In addition to his big kill total, Kull also racked up seven service aces over the pair of matches. In Friday's evening match against the Fighting Bees, Kull led the attack posting 11 kills and an ace. Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) tallied team-bests of 25 assists and 10 digs Friday. In Saturday's victory, Cousin had the hot hand recording 13 kills, while Kull was tough as well with 10 kills and match-high six aces. French recorded 36 assists and three block assists toward the winning effort. Senior right side hitter Nick Piccirillo (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) was a force defensively with seven digs.
Saint Xavier (2-8 overall/2-4 MAMVIC) continues its regular season slate on Monday, February 11, with a home match against MAMVIC East Division foe Clarke University (Iowa). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
