CHICAGO – Freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) had match-bests of 19 kills (.484 attack percentage) and nine total blocks (two solos) as the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team notched its first win of the season taking down Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) East Division foe Robert Morris University (Ill.) Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (1-7 overall/1-3 MAMVIC) took the match in five sets dropping the first one, 24-26, winning the next two, 25-16 and 25-23, falling in the fourth, 22-25, and then rebounding in the fifth for a 15-12 win. SXU was impressive offensively totaling 58 kills in the match to just 16 errors for a team attack percentage of .311.
Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) also had a big match for Saint Xavier setting a new career-high total with 43 assists to go along with his six block assists and team-high 13 digs on the night. Sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was tough as well recording 10 kills and eight digs for the Cougars, while junior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) tallied nine kills and an attack percentage of .368. Junior right side hitter Jacob Siska (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) finished with eight kills and six digs for SXU. Robert Morris was led by junior right side hitter Tyler Boyce with 16 kills.
Saint Xavier (0-7 overall/0-3 MAMVIC) will take on No. 5 ranked Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) in MAMVIC action on Friday, February 8. The match will be played at Palos Courts in Palos Heights, Ill., with a 7 p.m. start.
