Freshman Sam Kull had a big night for Saint Xavier at the Stritch Tri-Match Friday

Milwaukee, Wis. – Despite 20 combined kills, six total service aces and 11 total blocks (two solos) by freshman middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team failed to pick up its first win of the season Friday evening dropping a pair of matches during the Cardinal Stritch University Tri-Match in Milwaukee, Wis. In its first match of the night, the Cougars fell in four sets to Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) rival Robert Morris University (Ill.) in non-conference action by scores of 31-29, 23-25, 21-25 and 19-25. In the late match, SXU went four sets with conference foe and No. 9 ranked Cardinal Stritch falling 21-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 16-25. With the losses, Saint Xavier falls to 0-7 overall on the year and 0-3 in the conference standings.

Junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) also played well for the Cougars Friday at the tri-match. Cousin combined for 18 kills and 11 digs, while Blackwood totaled 17 kills and 16 digs on the evening. Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) finished with 68 assists along with 17 digs and eight total blocks (two solos).

Saint Xavier (0-7 overall/0-3 MAMVIC) gets another chance at Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Tuesday, February 5, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The conference match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
