Elgin, Ill. – Trailing 30-28 at the half after shooting only 35 percent from the field (10-for-29), the No. 12 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team came out red hot using an 18-0 run to start the second half to take control of the game and lead to a 75-67 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Judson University (Ill.) Wednesday night at the Lindner Fitness Center in Elgin, Ill. The Cougars (21-4 overall/17-2 CCAC) were without the services of their leading scorer, junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), due to a minor injury. However, senior point guard Anthony Grant (Calumet City, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) helped fill the void scoring a game-high 20 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the field.
Senior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) also had a nice outing for SXU posting a double-double of 15 points and game-best 11 rebounds. Senior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) was tough as well finishing with 13 points and game-high seven assists. Sophomore guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) also scored in double figures for Saint Xavier with 10 points as well as seven rebounds. The Eagles had four players reach double figures in scoring with three of them leading the way with 12 points apiece.
The first half was a tight one with both teams exchanging leads over the first 15 minutes of play before the host Eagles used a 13-2 run late in the frame to take a 30-20 lead with 3:26 to play before the break. The Cougars responded, however, closing out the half with an 8-0 run to close to within two points at halftime, 30-28. Saint Xavier carried the momentum into the second half using tough play on both sides of the court to fuel its big 18-0 run. The Cougars maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the rest of the game, but a flurry of late baskets in the final 30 seconds of the game allowed Judson to close to within six points.
Saint Xavier (20-4 overall/16-2 CCAC) continues conference play on Saturday, February 2, with a home game against Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
