CHICAGO – With the women's volleyball team leading the way with six student-athletes honored, the Saint Xavier University Athletics Department was pleased to learn that 18 of its student-athletes from the five fall teams that play in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) were named to the league's All-Academic Team in their respective sports when the teams were announced earlier this week. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must have been enrolled at her respective CCAC institution for a minimum of one academic year, have completed at least 30 semester hours and boast no less than a 3.25 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
Members of the SXU women's volleyball selected were seniors Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley), Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South), Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community), Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and Colleen O'Hara (Lemont, Ill./University of Iowa/Lemont) as well as sophomore Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth). The Cougar women's soccer team boasted the next highest group (5) including seniors Sara Cervenka (Sycamore, Ill./Northern Illinois University/Sycamore), Sam Formella (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) and Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) along with junior Molly Sheehan (Orland Park, Ill./Stagg) and sophomore Danielle Inzinga (Orland Park, Ill./Marist).
The men's cross country team had three student-athletes recognized in senior Ricky Olmedo (Blue Island, Ill./Calumet College/Robert Morris/Eisenhower), junior Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) and sophomore Mark Catania (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North). The women's cross country team and men's soccer team each had two of its members named to the all-academic team. Women's cross country had senior Ashley Shares (Palos Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Stagg) and sophomore Amanda Magee (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North). The men's soccer team had sophomores AJ Pfatschbacher (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) and David Rodriguez (Montgomery, Ill./Yorkville) recognized.
In total, the CCAC honored 305 student-athletes from its 15 member institutions claim spots on the all-academic teams this year. The 2012 class of award winners represented an increase of 31 individuals to that of 2011 when 274 student-athletes were recognized.
