CHICAGO – With the first two meets of its indoor season in the books, the 2013 Saint Xavier University men's track team had plenty of highlights and some individual performers to keep an eye on as the season progresses.  The Cougars opened their season at the Lewis Invitational on Friday, January 18, and then competed at the Titan Open hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., this past weekend.  Although the squad has not boasted any national qualifiers to date, head coach Ed McAllister believes that there is a strong core of runners on his squad who are getting close to the qualifying marks.

"I liked the way that we got our season started at the Lewis Invite," said McAllister.  "This is a very young team with no seniors and I felt that we reacted quite well for our opening meet.  John Stancato, Shane Kenney and Brian Corcoran are all potential national qualifiers, and as a team, we are maturing each week."

Highlights from the Lewis Invitational included a strong second place showing by sophomore John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) in the 55-meter dash in 6.59 seconds, a solid third-place finish by sophomore Matt Krakowski (Alsip, Ill./Marist) in the 600 meter run in 1:27.77, freshman Eric Hancock's (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) second-place finish in the 1000 meter run in 2:39.86 and sophomore Dan Spencer's (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) fourth-place mark in the 55-meter high hurdles in 8.29 seconds.  The Cougars recorded three outstanding winning performances in the meet as well. Junior Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) won the 3000 meter run in 9:01.63, while junior Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) took the 800 meter run in 1:58.10 and the 4x400 meter relay team of Stancato, Spencer, Krakowski and Kenney clocked a winning time of 3:33.38.

The Cougars brought an abbreviated squad to the Titan Open and used the event as a training meet for upcoming competitions.  Stancato once again starred in the sprint events making the finals in both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash and finished third overall in the 200 meter in 22.85 seconds.  Kenney finished seventh overall in the 400-meter dash in 52.45 seconds.

Saint Xavier will again take a smaller portion of its team to the Tom Hathaway Challenge in Indianapolis on Saturday, February 2.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
