CHICAGO – For the fourth time this season, the No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team scored at least 100 points in a 100-64 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and senior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) both had big games for the Cougars, who have now won their last nine games and 17 of their last 18 games. Karp led all scorers with 26 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds for his 10th double-double effort of the season. Green tallied 17 points and a game-best seven assists toward the victory. The pair combined to shoot an impressive 15-for-25 (60 percent) from the field. As a team, SXU shot 51 percent (34-for-67) for the game, including a blistering 61 percent (19-for-31) in the second half.
Also scoring in double figures for the Cougars Saturday were senior point guard Anthony Grant (Calumet City, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) with 14 points and sophomore guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) with 10 points. In his first game in a Saint Xavier basketball uniform, standout wide receiver Shane Zackery (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) from the Cougar football team showcased his hardwood skills scoring eight points on perfect 3-for-3 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, in a reserve role. Senior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) also finished with eight points for SXU and set a new career-high mark with five blocks on the afternoon, while senior guard Mike Beutel (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) was a big lift off the bench with seven points and nine rebounds. The Crimson Wave were led by sophomore guard Damonte Lowery with team-bests of 12 points and four steals.
The Cougars were dominant from the onset jumping out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first two minutes behind three-pointers from Krieger and Karp. Calumet closed to within seven, 18-11, with just over 14 minutes to play in the half, but a 15-4 surge over the next seven minutes of action allowed Saint Xavier to pull away for good. The Cougars led 44-29 at the half and then scored 56 points after the break to hit the century mark. Saint Xavier took its largest lead of the game, 93-51, with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. SXU was tough on the boards as well Saturday pulling down 53 caroms in the contest, including 18 offensive rebounds which helped lead to 20 second chance points.
Saint Xavier (20-4 overall/16-2 CCAC) heads to Elgin, Ill., for a conference battle with Judson University (Ill.) on Wednesday, January 30. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
