Dubuque, Iowa – Junior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led the way with team-bests of nine kills and six digs, but Saint Xavier University fell to Clarke University (Iowa) in Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) action Thursday night in Dubuque, Iowa. The Cougars (0-4 overall/0-2 MAMVIC) lost the match in three sets by scores of 22-25, 19-25 and 21-25. SXU started the match well posting an attack percentage of .333 (10 kills, three errors) in the opening set, but struggled offensively in the final two sets totaling 17 kills compared to 15 attacking errors the rest of the way.
Sophomore setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) led the Cougars with 22 assists to go along with his two kills, four digs and two total blocks (one solo). Sophomore middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded five kills, three digs and an assisted block. The Crusaders were led by freshman outside hitter Joe Biros, who totaled a match-best 13 kills.
Saint Xavier (0-4 overall/0-2 MAMVIC) returns to action next week with a non-conference road match against Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Milwaukee.
