CHICAGO – Mikayla Leyden, a senior guard at Trinity High School in River Forest, Ill., recently signed a letter of intent to continue both her athletic and academic career at Saint Xavier University as a member of the Cougar women's basketball program. The Chicago native will be a freshman at SXU in the fall of 2013 and will compete for playing time on the court during the 2013-14 season. Saint Xavier University women's basketball coach Bob Hallberg is excited about the effective combination of athletic ability and shooting skill that Leyden will bring to the program.
Leyden is the daughter of Pat and Trish Leyden of Chicago. She is currently coached by Ed Stritzel at Trinity High School. Leyden had a strong start to her senior season scoring 27 points against Resurrection and 22 points against Oak Park-River Forest and helped the Blazers start the season with a perfect 4-0 mark, but an injury in early December ended her final prep season prematurely.
"Our staff is confident that Mikayla is a great catch for our program," said Hallberg. "She has an unbelievable long-range shot and has a ton of athleticism. I believe Mikayla will have an immediate impact on our team and be a huge asset to our future success."
