Romeoville, Ill. – Just a couple of months after wrapping up her impressive senior season on the women's cross country team, Saint Xavier University senior Ashley Shares (Palos Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Stagg) impressed again this past weekend winning the 5,000 meter run (5K) and qualifying for the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships with a "A" standard time of 18:24.57 at the Lewis University Invitational in Romeoville, Ill. Shares' time also set a new school record for the indoor 5K. The 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships is held Thursday, February 28, to Saturday, March 2, at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Senior Rachael Dean (Lindenhurst, Ill./Judson University/Lakes) qualified for SXU the previous week in the indoor mile with a time of 5:12.84.
"Ashley is running phenomenally well right now," said Saint Xavier University women's track & field coach Lisa Ebel. "It is so much fun to watch all of her hard work pay off and I'm looking forward to seeing her compete at Nationals. Having two qualifiers in the first two weeks of our indoor season has been thrilling and great momentum boost for the rest of our team."
Other highlights from the Lewis University Invitational included: a first-place finish by Dean in the 800 meter run (2:22.16), a first-place finish by Shares in the 3,000 meter run (10:52.46) and a host of second-place finishes in a number of other events. Freshman Ann Kolker (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) took second in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:21.92, while freshman Lexi McDermid (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) was second as well in the 400 meter dash (1:06.31). Senior Jackie Ott (Island Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) placed second in the 800 meter run finishing right behind Dean (2:22.50). In the 1,000 meter run, junior Leslie Rosario (Fort Myers, Fla./Neosho County CC/North Fort Myers) ran strong taking second in the event with a time of 3:14.24. The SXU 4x400 meter relay team also finished second (4:21.28).
Saint Xavier heads to Findlay, Ohio, this weekend for the two-day Findlay University Classic. All events for the meet will be held at the Malcolm Athletic Center in Findlay.
