Bourbonnais, Ill. - Despite eight hits as a team, the No. 2 seeded Saint Xavier University softball team could not plate a run falling 3-0 to No. 4 seed Waldorf College (Iowa) Thursday in the 2007 NAIA Region VII Softball Tournament in Bourbonnais, Ill. With the loss, the Cougars end the 2007 season with an overall record of 30-15.
SXU got two hits apiece from senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower), senior first baseman Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton), and junior catcher Aly Kelley (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in Thursday's game. Junior right-hander Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) threw 4.1 innings for the Cougars and allowed 11 hits, three runs (earned), and one walk with one strikeout. Junior Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) pitched 1.2 innings of relief and gave up one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Bartels took the loss (10-6) on the mound for SXU.
William Penn got a RBI single in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead in the game. A two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning gave the Statesmen a 3-0 advantage in the game. The Cougars had chances to tie or break into the lead built up by William Penn, but could not plate a run in the game falling 3-0 to end their season.
Saint Xavier (30-15 overall/14-3 CCAC) has wrapped up the 2007 season with its second loss in the 2007 NAIA Region VII Softball Tournament. The Cougars finished second in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) standings with a record of 14-3 and won the CCAC Tournament with a dramatic 7-5 win over No. 1 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.).
