CHICAGO – Over the holiday break, a pair of distance runners on the Saint Xavier University men's track team qualified for the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in the marathon with their times at the Fighting Bee Half Marathon in Davenport, Iowa. Junior Chris Sarna (Palos Park, Ill./Stagg) finished second overall in the race with an impressive "A" standard qualifying time of 72:16 for the 13.1-mile event, while junior Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) crossed the finish line a minute later at 73:16 to claim fourth place and a "B" standard qualifying time. The marathon at the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships will take place in Marion, Ind., on Saturday, May 25, with the race kicking off at 6 a.m.
"Both of these young men ran superb races," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "The conditions were ideal and it is very advantageous to have national qualifiers this early in our track season. Both men should run extremely well in May."
The Saint Xavier University men's track team officially kicks off its indoor season this evening at the Lewis University Invitational in Romeoville, Ill. The meet is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
