CHICAGO – Senior guard Maureen Riley (Alma, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) sank a career-best eight three-pointers (8-for-11) and scored a career-high 24 points to help propel No. 12 ranked Saint Xavier University to a 99-58 victory over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's basketball action Wednesday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago. With the victory, the Cougars (17-3 overall/12-3 CCAC) have now won 10 straight games with its last loss coming a full month ago on December 16, 2012. Sophomore guard/forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers), the reigning NAIA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, also had a solid night for SXU finishing with 20 points and seven rebounds. Every active player on the Saint Xavier roster scored at least two points towards the winning effort Wednesday. Trinity Christian was led by sophomore guard Rebecca DeHaan with 15 points and seven rebounds. SXU finished the game hitting 54 percent (39-for-72) of its shots from the field.
Both teams came out firing early in the game and exchanged leads over the first 10 minutes of action. With the score knotted at 20-20, the Cougar defense came alive limiting the visiting Trolls to no points over an eight-minute stretch as Saint Xavier scored 23 unanswered points to build a 43-20 lead. Riley sparked the charge hitting a three-pointer with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half. Trinity Christian sank a free throw with 1:03 to play in the frame to end the scoring drought and went into the locker room trailing 49-24. SXU shot a blistering 59 percent (19-for-32) from the field in first-half action, including a 60 percent clip (9-for-15) from beyond the three-point arc. The Cougars' lead was never threatened in the second half as the hosts led by as many as 45 points in the final minutes of play.
