Joliet, Ill. - Sophomore lefthander Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) threw seven innings of shutout baseball and allowed just two hits and two walks with five strikeouts as No. 1 seed Saint Xavier University earned a 2-0 victory over No. 3 seeded University of St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday in the 2006 NAIA Region VII Baseball Tournament at Silver Cross Field at Joliet, Ill. In addition, senior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) provided all the offense for the Cougars (30-24 overall) in Saturday's win recording RBI hits in the third and seventh innings.

With the victory, SXU advances to the tournament's championship game and would have to be defeated twice by its next opponent to be eliminated. Christy finished 2-for-3 in the game with a double and two RBI, while freshman center fielder Don Skelly (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Senior righthander Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) came in to pitch the final two innings for Saint Xavier and earned his eighth save of the season giving up no hits or walks with two strikeouts.

SXU (30-24 overall/16-2 CCAC) will have to wait to see who its next opponent will be for the title game. The tourney continues on Sunday, May 14, but the championship will be played either Sunday or Monday (May 15), depending on which team (No. 2 seed William Penn University, No. 3 seed University of St. Francis, and No. 6 seed Grand View College) survives.
