Romeoville, Ill. – In its first competition of the indoor season, the Saint Xavier University women's track & field team had some impressive performances at the Lewis University Open Friday night at the Recreation Center Fieldhouse in Romeoville, Ill. Senior Rachael Dean (Lindenhurst, Ill./Judson University/Lakes) highlighted the meet for the Cougars winning the mile run and turning in a "B" standard national qualifying time of 5:12.84 in the event. Her time was less than a second from the "A" standard time of 5:12.00 and puts her in great shape early in the season of competing at the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships, which starts Thursday, February 28, in Geneva, Ohio.
"What a great way to open our indoor season," said SXU women's track & field coach Lisa Ebel. "Although Rachael winning and qualifying for Nationals in the mile was the exclamation point on the evening, I felt the team as a whole did a great job and there were plenty of individual performances that showcased the amount of talent that this squad possesses. It should be another great season and I'm looking forward to watching our entire team compete this weekend."
Freshman Ann Kolker (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) had a nice track debut for the Cougars Friday taking second place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:32.40. Junior Anna Galvez (Glenview, Ill./Oakton CC/Maine East) also ran well for Saint Xavier finishing second overall in the 600 meter run with a 1:44.50 clocking. Senior Jackie Ott (Island Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) took third place in the 1000 meter run at 3:05.55, while senior Ashley Shares (Palos Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Stagg) claimed third as well in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:48.19. In the 400 meter dash, freshman Lexi McDermid (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) finished fourth in 1:05.71.
Saint Xavier returns to Romeoville, Ill., on Friday, January 18, for the Lewis University Invitational. The meet begins at 4 p.m. at the Recreation Center Fieldhouse.
