CHICAGO - The last week of December turned out to be an awards-filled one for Saint Xavier University sophomore forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) after being named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the SXU Holiday Tournament on Saturday and then claiming Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors Tuesday. Stuut, who earned her second league player of the week award this season, averaged a double-double in a week that saw the Cougars win all three games in their eight-team tournament, including a pair over NAIA Division II ranked clubs.
For the seven-day period, she averaged 18.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while shooting .500 from the field (23-for-46). Stuut opened the tournament with 19 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in an 82-49 victory over Ashford University (Iowa) on Thursday and followed that up with a 17-point, 16-rebound, 6-assist performance in a 77-61 win over No. 23 Huntington University (Ind.) last Friday. The two double-doubles were her eighth and ninth such efforts of the year. She then closed out the week helping SXU knock off previously unbeaten and No. 7-ranked University of Saint Francis (Ind.), 78-61, with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the championship game on Saturday.
Saint Xavier (12-3 overall/7-3 CCAC) has won each of its last five games and is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation. The Cougars continue their regular season on Saturday, January 5, with a 1 p.m. home game against CCAC foe Holy Cross College (Ind.) at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
