CHICAGO – Junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the way with a double-double effort of 21 points and 13 rebounds to help propel the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team to its sixth straight win with an 80-66 victory over Robert Morris University (Ill.) Thursday in the first day of the SXU Midwest Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Karp was just one of the key performers in Thursday's win as senior point guards Anthony Grant (Calumet City, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) and Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) as well as sophomore guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) all had monster individual performances for the Cougars. For the second straight game, SXU used another solid second-half effort on both sides of the court to pull away for the victory.
Green became the first player in Saint Xavier men's basketball history to amass 500 career assists with his career-best 16 dishes on the day. Grant and Krieger each dropped 20 points in the game. Krieger sank an impressive six three-pointers shooting 67 percent (6-for-9) from beyond the arc on the afternoon. After leading 44-34 at the half, the Cougars hit 55 percent (16-for-29) of their second-half shots and held the visiting Eagles to just 28 percent shooting (9-for-32) to put the game away. Saint Xavier kept its double-digit advantage all but a few seconds of the second half and led by as many as 21 points, 68-47, with 9:40 to play. Freshman forward Joshua Mawhorr (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) narrowly missed a double-double for SXU finishing with eight points and nine rebounds. RMU was led by senior guard Brian Bradley, who scored 15 points.
Saint Xavier (9-3 overall/8-2 CCAC) continues the three-day Midwest Tournament on Friday, December 21, matching up against Saint Ambrose University (Iowa). The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. tip-off at the Shannon Center.
