Bourbonnais, Ill. - Despite two hits apiece from three different players in the line-up, the No. 2 seeded Saint Xavier University softball team could not get the timely hit and dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in 10 innings to No. 6 seed Robert Morris College (Ill.) as part of the 2007 NAIA Region VII Softball Tournament Wednesday at Tiger Field in Bourbonnais, Ill. RMC got a huge game from freshman righthander Amanda Lite, who threw all 10 innings for the Eagles and allowed 10 hits, one run (earned), and five walks with 12 strikeouts. In addition, Lite went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and scored both of RMC's two runs in the game.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) recorded a RBI double to left-centerfield to bring home senior center fielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) from first base. After five scoreless innings, Robert Morris tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI single by junior left fielder Elizabeth Sundin. SXU had plenty of chances to bring home the game-winning run in extra innings leaving a runner at second base in each of the eighth, ninth, and 10th innings. In fact, the Cougars left 14 runners stranded on the base paths in the game.

The Eagles scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning when Lite led off the inning with a double and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly. Freshman rightie Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss (12-6) and pitched the first nine innings for SXU allowing six hits, two runs (earned), and three walks with one strikeout. Shearer also faced Lite in the top of the 10th inning before junior Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) came in to relieve her. Bartels threw one inning and gave up no hits, runs, or walks with no strikeouts. Senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic), sophomore third baseman Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College), and sophomore designated player Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) all finished with two hits in the game for SXU.

Saint Xavier (30-14 overall/14-3 CCAC) now awaits the loser of today's No. 1 seed William Penn University (Iowa) and No. 4 Waldorf College (Iowa) match-up. The Cougars will play on Thursday, May 10, at 10 a.m. in an elimination game of the 2007 NAIA Region VII Softball Tournament.
